I was once told that a writer does not write because she wants to; she writes because she has to.
A carefully constructed sentence or depiction can be a work of art that inspires, consoles, or entertains readers, whether it’s within a book, restaurant review, travel log, original story or poem.
In my lower moments of neglecting my craft, I wondered why I felt so aggravated with myself. But, when I finally put thoughts down on paper again, I’d feel a relief of pressure as my own words spill onto the page.
My passion is writing. I write because I must. As most any artist will attest, their craft is what helps them vent frustrations, share joys, fuel their days, and continue to inspire them to create more and more. One project begets another project, and so forth.
When I helped teach Intro to Essay Writing, I loved the sense of empowerment I believed I was sharing with students, despite the begrudging and English-hating pupils I would sometimes get. I wanted to share with them the power of words. Hopefully, some of those students walked away with a better appreciation and understanding of the written word.
A single phrase, a single word can change a person’s life.
